If the food changes, the mouth changes
In the traditional carnivorous culture, Mongolians who did not eat sweets had very clean teeth even though they had never brushed their teeth.
However, recently, sweets have spread rapidly, and at the same time, children's tooth decay is rapidly increasing.
It is reminiscent of Japanese teeth in the late XNUMXs when Okazaki graduated from university and became a pediatric dentist.
Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia, experienced a rapid increase in tooth decay.Next, along the border with China, along the main road with China.
More than XNUMX years ago, an American dentist named Price noticed that an increase in sweets increases the incidence of tooth decay, gum disease, and misaligned teeth in children.
After traveling around undeveloped lands around the world, for example, Melanesian people in the South Pacific, who traditionally ate seafood and potatoes, had very clean teeth, but they did not eat sweet or soft foods. I reported in my book that as soon as things came in, the number of cavities increased and the teeth became misaligned.
Price's book was translated by Mr. Tsuneo Katayama, a dentist, and published under the title "Dietary Habits and Physical Degeneration", and is still read as a masterpiece.
Mr. Okazaki, who read the book, said that he came to think, "When the food changes, the first thing that changes is the mouth."

Food education learned from Asahiyama Zoo
Mr. Okazaki's lecture is also unique in its lively interaction with the audience.A short question is posed, and participants select an answer by raising their hand from three to four options.
One of the quizzes on the day was a three-choice question, ``If you had a watermelon cut in half, where would a wild monkey start eating it?
If you think about it normally, it seems that the correct answer is a bright red fruit.Think about it for a moment.
The correct answer is the second seed. “Because it is the most nutritious” is the reason why we start eating from seeds. In fact, it seems to be eaten next to seeds.
Mr. Jun Ishikawa, a former professor emeritus at Hokkaido University, pointed out this in his book "Why do humans brush their teeth?" I went around asking where to start eating.
When I asked zoo keepers, veterinarians, and zoo directors, none of them gave me a clear answer, but one person immediately answered, "It's from seeds."That person was Mr. Masao Kosuge, the director of Asahiyama Zoo (Asahikawa City), which became famous for its animal behavior exhibits.
“One of the reasons why Asahiyama Zoo became so famous is the way it is fed,” says Mr. Okazaki.
Primarily, wild animals such as monkeys spend half of their day looking for food. However, if humans feed them, they will finish a day's worth of food in less than XNUMX minutes.
"If it were us, what would we be doing for the next twenty-three hours and fifty minutes? All we can do is lie down. That's why the other zoo animals don't move."
On the other hand, at Asahiyama Zoo, we intentionally sprinkle food such as seeds under wood chips to make them difficult to pick up and eat.The monkey then spends a lot of time looking for it.That's why the animals at Asahiyama Zoo are so energetic and active that they have a good reputation.
"Basically, it's the same thing as making Japanese children more energetic," Okazaki said, referring to Asahiyama Zoo's initiatives for food education.
