Children should be aware of sleep apnea

The reason why there are so many child actors with gums
Have you noticed the mouths of child actors in TV dramas lately? That's right, there are many children whose upper gums stand out when their mouths are open.
For children with protruding gums, when they close their mouths in a straight line and say "i", the upper front teeth move forward so that they cover the lower front teeth, and the lower front teeth are only slightly visible or completely hidden. I can't see it.This condition is called deep bite.
Mr. Okazaki warns, "The number of people with protruding gums will increase tremendously in the future. Actually, it's not just a matter of looking good, it's also bad for your health."
During his dental school days, Mr. Okazaki was taught that a good bite is when the tips of the upper and lower front teeth touch each other. "When the tips touch each other, there is a gap [between the baby teeth], and [the permanent teeth] have erupted nicely."
However, today, not only is there no gap, but there is an increase in overbite, with four to five-year-olds covering up to about two-thirds of their lower front teeth.
"If the tips don't touch each other, the upper teeth will grow, the gums will grow, and they will come down. I think that's why the gums are visible."

Even children with their mouths open
Mr. Okazaki, who specializes in dental care for children with disabilities, first encountered deep occlusion when he was a four-year-old child who had been tube-fed since birth.
“Children who have never eaten from their mouth cannot see their lower front teeth at all. is appearing (even in healthy children).”
Also, most children with Down's syndrome have their mouths open, but according to Okazaki, this is because "the muscles are weak."
However, it's not that hard to find children with gaping mouths, even if they don't have Down syndrome.
Whether it's a deep bite or an open mouth, what used to be seen mainly in handicapped children has spread to normal healthy children.
Mr. Okazaki began to think, "Children today may not have developed their oral functions to the point where they should have developed."
But the story doesn't end there.

Apnea that leads to high blood pressure and accidents
The photo above is an X-ray of a person with an incisal bite (left) and a deep bite (right) where the tips of the front teeth touch each other.
You can see that the red arrow indicating the width (size) of the airway is long in incisal bite and short in deep bite. This is because in an incisal bite, the tongue tends to move forward and the airway becomes wider, while in a deep bite, the lower teeth are behind and the tongue moves backward, narrowing the airway.
“If the airway is narrow, it is conceivable that it is difficult for enough oxygen to reach the lungs.
With that in mind, Mr. Okazaki started talking about obstructive sleep apnea.
Sleep apnea, the frequent pauses in breathing during sleep, is often caused by the muscles of the tongue loosening and blocking the airway.
It seems that some people stop breathing for five and a half hours while sleeping for more than seven hours. It's an abnormal state where you keep strangling yourself all the time you're asleep and you can't take it anymore and you can't breathe.
Obese people with an enlarged tongue and people with small chins are said to be susceptible to this disease. If your jaw is small, your tongue is behind your mouth and can easily block your airway.
Mr. Okazaki says that sleep apnea can cause high blood pressure and heart disease, and because he can't get enough sleep at night, he suddenly falls asleep during the daytime when he should be nervous. I explained that there is a danger of leading to a serious accident.
For example, studies show that people with sleep apnea are six times more likely to have a car accident than those without.
