Masa Watanabe, a doctor who serves as chairman of the Society for the Advancement of Life Sciences and chairman of the NPO Japan Society for General Medicine, said at the "Medicine and Food Health Forum" (sponsored by the Japan Macrobiotic Association) in January of this year, before he became ill. We had you give a lecture about health promotion that paid attention to "me-byo" of this.
The theme was "diet therapy for diabetes".Mr. Watanabe, who overcame diabetes by eating and exercising without using drugs and became healthy enough to complete the marathon, also talks about how to aim for healthy longevity, mainly from the perspective of food. Please read it as one of the special articles.

Diabetes, which has increased 38 times since the end of the war, serious complications become a great tragedy

After the war, along with changes in dietary habits, diseases continued to increase.
According to the materials presented by Mr. Watanabe, from the end of the war to 38, gastric cancer remained flat, but liver cancer increased XNUMX times, and colon cancer increased XNUMX times.XNUMX times higher for diabetes.
On the other hand, in terms of diet, fat intake increased XNUMX times and animal protein increased XNUMX times during the same period.
Mr. Watanabe pointed out that the cause of the rapid increase in illness was ``obviously the result of changes centered on dietary habits.''
Regarding diabetes, according to statistics in 20, the number of adults with diabetes (ages 79-11) who are strongly suspected of having diabetes is about XNUMX million. It corresponds to XNUMX% of the total XNUMX million adults.
By age group, it is 20% for those aged 39-40, but it jumps to 59% for those aged 33-60. One in three people will get diabetes. For those aged 79-60, the prevalence rises to XNUMX%, and those who do not develop diabetes become a minority.
The average annual medical cost per person with diabetes is about 28 yen.According to Mr. Watanabe, dialysis costs an average of XNUMX million yen per person per year.
It is said that there are about XNUMX dialysis patients, and a simple calculation is about XNUMX billion yen per year. The cost of dialysis alone can add up to an enormous amount.
Diabetes mellitus is a serious complication. "Some people have their legs cut off or become blind. Losing their eyesight after becoming an adult is a great tragedy. I can't study Braille," said Mr. Watanabe, speaking of the fear of complications.

Fat gain is insulin resistance If high insulin continues, it will be inadequate

Diabetes is scary, but the mechanism of its onset is now well understood. "One is insulin deficiency and the other is insulin resistance."
Insulin resistance refers to a condition in which insulin is not produced properly.According to Mr. Watanabe, inhibition by fat is one of the causes.
Insulin deficiency is the idea that "People who have postprandial hyperglycemia will release a lot of insulin. After several years of hyperinsulinemia, they will become insulin deficient."
One of the criteria for diagnosing diabetes is a fasting blood glucose level of XNUMX (mg/dl) or higher in two measurements.
If the first measurement is XNUMX or higher, it should be controlled with diet and exercise therapy in the next three months, and then another measurement should be taken. It seems that it is not uncommon for doctors to prescribe drugs that lower blood sugar levels quickly.
In addition, there are standards for casual blood sugar levels of 25 or higher, Hb (hemoglobin) AXNUMXc of XNUMX% or higher, postprandial blood sugar levels of XNUMX or higher, and glucoalbumin levels of XNUMX% or higher. will be
