Sagen Ishizuka, who preached food education and nutrition
Yoichi Sakurazawa (XNUMX-XNUMX) was the founder of the macrobiotic diet, and the background to its birth was the flow of "food therapy" to reconsider traditional Japanese food.Ekiken Kaibara, Masamasu Ando, Nanboku Mizuno, and others who were active in the late Edo period were the leading figures, but the starting point that directly connected to macrobiotics was Sagen Ishizuka (XNUMX-XNUMX), a military doctor in the Meiji period.Looking back on the achievements of Sagen, who was the first to use the word “food education” in Japan and preached the way of food, I would like to reaffirm the origins of macrobiotics.
Surpassing the average life expectancy despite being sick
Sagen was born in XNUMX, at the end of the Edo period, as the eldest son of a town doctor in Fukui City.
After studying hard at the Fukui clan medical school, he moved to Tokyo and obtained qualifications as a pharmacist and a doctor.
He had served in the Seinan Rebellion and the Sino-Japanese War, but due to kidney disease, he retired in 29 as a reservist to the rank of Major General Pharmacy Inspector.
Suffering from skin diseases since he was young, Sagen turned his attention to food from an early age, and after retiring from the military, he set up a clinic in Ichigaya, Tokyo called the Ishizuka Food Clinic, where he provides medical examinations using the visual examination method and dietary guidance. I devoted myself to treatment.
The clinic was crowded with many patients, and Zuo Xuan was ignored as a doctor.
In 42, he fell ill in Shizuoka, where he went to give a lecture, became bedridden, and finally passed away due to uremia.
58 years old when he died.Compared to the present age, I have the impression that I am still young, but compared to the average life expectancy of 42 years old for men at that time, it is considerably higher. If he had not been afflicted with disease, he might have lived longer.

Basic law based on the importance of food education
In the January-December 12 issue of this magazine, “The Story of Sagen Ishizuka, the Founder of Food” (published by Seishoku Kyokai), the author, Mr. Iwasaseichi, who is from Fukui City like Sagen, writes about Sagen’s Here are three accomplishments:
(20) First use of the word “food education” Sagen began announcing his research on food in the 29s, and after retiring from the army, in XNUMX, he published the academic book “Kagaku-teki Shokuiku Longevity Theory”. Announced. The word ``shokuiku'' appeared for the first time in this book.
At that time, British philosopher and sociologist Herbert Spencer (XNUMX-XNUMX)'s theory of three educations, ``intellectual education, moral education, and physical education,'' was widely known, but Sagen added ``food education'' to this theory. He also preached that dietary education is the basis of all education.
Furthermore, he said that dietary education should be something that parents should do at home.
In addition, Gensai Murai (XNUMX-XNUMX), a popular writer from the same era as Sagen, introduced ``shokuiku'' in his best-selling enlightenment novel ``Kuido Raku.'' It became even more popular as it was used.
As you know, the spotlight has once again been on the "food education" that has been alive and well, and it has come to fruition with the enactment of the Basic Law on Food Education in 17.
The Fundamental Law for Dietary Education also adopts Sagen's idea and states that ``Food education is the basis for living and should be the foundation of intellectual, moral and physical education.''
